MHYSA

Despite references to mainstream stars like Donna Summer, Prince, Lauryn Hill, and Beyoncé,
MHYSA's atmospheric ballads and discordant experimental club tracks have found suitable
homes on progressive labels such as NON, Halcyon Veil, and Hyperdub. Among the
vocalist/producer's releases are the widely acclaimed Fantasii (2017) and Nevaeh (2020).
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, she got involved with music as a youngster, singing in church and
at school. In 2015, MHYSA debuted with the incendiary "Power Cuts" and followed with
Hivemind, both on NON. The Hivemind EP was led by an update of Sade's "Jezebel" that
rendered the source material nearly undetectable beyond the lyrics. Fantasii, a full-length
recorded for Rabit's Halcyon Veil label, appeared in 2017 and was acknowledged as one of the
year's best albums by publications such as The Wire, The Quietus, and FACT. Mhysa returned
in early 2020 with Nevaeh, a more ambient and intimate set for Hyperdub.
MHYSA will have musical support from her long-time collaborator, lawd knows, with whom they
formed the sound and performance duo SCRAAATCH in 2014.

By combining trance-like melodies with layers of guitar, piano, and harmonies, they are able to translate more than just sounds that are pleasing to the ear. Their creations arouse a full body experience that feels like a spell being cast. They consider their sound a form of musical alchemy and hope that whoever is listening is left with feelings of wonder, curiosity, and expansion
